It’s HERE!! Spiritbox released their debut album “Eternal Blue” and I am here to say it’s about as awesome as you’d imagine it to be. Most of us have probably heard the singles from the album “Hurt You“, “Constance“, “Circle With Me” and their most recent one “Secret Garden“. This release does not let us down when it comes to the remaining songs that we hadn’t heard until now. Spiritbox is a Canadian based band formed by the husband and wife duo Courtney LaPlante and Mike Stringer. They have previously released a self titled EP back in October 2017 but this is their first official release since being with Rise Records. They’ve made quite the impression on the heavy metal and rock music community!
When it comes to putting the music together it takes a team and they’ve got an amazing one. Courtney is the vocalist, Mike Stringer is on the guitar, Bill Crook is on the bass and last but not least Zev Rose is on the drums. Who is this mysterious Zev Rose you ask? Well, that’s a fair question since he hasn’t been in the promo material. Unfortunately due to COVID and travel restrictions Zev couldn’t travel from the US to Canada for the promo shots!
Right from the start of the album you get heavy music with an appropriate dose of melodic vocals before Courtney unleashes her beast of a scream to finish off the first song of the album “Sun Killer“. In my honest opinion I think she is going to be one of THE most popular frontwoman due to the fact that Courtney is on another level compared to a lot of other vocalists in this genre and she definitely stands apart from the rest! Rock on!
One of the most haunting songs on this album is “Constance” which is written about the heartbreaking disease dementia and how it can creep up on someone and take hold of the person they once were. The song was dedicated to Courtney‘s grandmother who unfortunately passed away before she could say goodbye due to travel restrictions. During my first time hearing “Constance” and watching the music video I literally cried. It’s a hard hitter in a subject which I had not heard anyone touch on before. They present us with a dark and heavy atmosphere in the video and the music itself is heavy while taking us on a journey that ends up almost being confusing which I can only imagine is a fraction of what people who have to deal with dementia go through.
One of my favorite songs off of the album is “Yellowjacket” featuring Sam Carter of Architects. He brings his screams along side Courtney and I certainly am not mad about it! I was interested to see what this collaboration would hold, and it’s gold! My favorite lyric from “Yellowjacket” is “Fear, full of hate perforates me like a yellow jacket. Where was the grace when I was begging? I was asking for it”. Where else do you find lyrics so punchy and so different? These guys are creative when they are writing and I love how they express it. They’re super talented, there’s no denying it!
Overall this album is a BANGER which, we all knew it would be, considering Spiritbox has burst into the music scene with no holds barred, and they are not slowing down any time soon!
