Rabbit Cult is back with the new single ‘Pink Rifle’
Bunny metal duo Rabbit Cult released their new single Pink Rifle, with which playful irony merges into the world of dark threats. The captivating combination of electronic pop metal and kantele continues the soundscape familiar from the band’s first single, Cute AF . The lyrics of the song reflect on the themes of power, predation and innocence. The production has been carried out in close collaboration with Markus Kaarlonen (Poets of the Fall).
“This song was the result of a long refinement – it was rewritten about ten times before it found its final form. The arrangement was thoroughly thought out, and in the end, the whole structure was renewed by increasing the tempo and adding new lyrics,” says the band’s multi-instrumentalist Marianne Heikkinen (drums, percussion, guitar, bass, keyboards, backing vocals).
“The original composition was really progressive and complex, and full of time signature changes. I was already sure that it was ready, but then Markus, with whom we have been producing this together, suggested that at least the chorus could go to only four. The next night I woke up playing a new guitar riff – even though I don’t even know how to play the guitar. In the end, only a few lines of the chorus remained of the original version, as well as half of the original riff in the intro,” recalls Salla-Marja Hätinen, who is responsible for the lead vocals and kanteles.
“It was also the first time I was involved in writing the lyrics. We sought inspiration from texts written by men in the last millennium, which sound questionable at the moment, to say the least. An example of these is Bruce Sprinsteen’s I’m On Fire, originally written for Elvis, which tells quite frankly about his desire for a little girl. Fortunately, times have changed at least a little!”“, Marianne comments.
The pop metal duo, formerly known as Sararu, changed their name last year. At the same time, the visual side of the band was also updated. The electronic-tinged bunny metal of the band, which has been declared Rabbit Cult, weaves together the matriarchal roots of Kalevala mythology and the recognizable sound of Finland’s national instrument, the kantele.
Rabbit Cult is not only a band, but also a story. A story that began at a time when modern states did not yet exist, and explorers wrote on their maps towards Terra Feminarum (=Women’s Land), which centuries later became an independent country called Finland. Rabbit Cult continues the tradition of this secret society led by women.
