Interview with Lotta from Luna Kills – “When I’m on stage, it’s the best feeling ever”

Tuska Festival is always marked in our calendar as one of the big events we are always present for. The atmosphere is always right, the line-up is great, and you end up seeing friends and local bands you haven’t seen in a while. This year, that happened to take place on the last day of the festival where we ended up sitting down with Lotta from the up-and-coming band Luna Kills while we had a bit of downtime, and talked with her about how things have been for them since we last talked in 2021…

Trying to catch up with what has been going on with Luna Kills over the past 3 years or so, Lotta tells us that since then they’ve released a couple of singles every year but are now preparing for a full album with completely new material, so none of the earlier released singles will be on it, exciting times ahead (back then we didn’t know things were going to get even more exciting, because they have signed with SharpTone Records in the meantime).

When we touch on Lotta starting to use some more growls in their songs from time to time, she admits that initially she was a bit ashamed about her screams and wasn’t really inclined to do so, but then she really wanted to learn something new and is a big metal fan. So she ended up checking out some tutorials on YouTube and started practicing. She recorded some screams in the demo of ‘deep cuts’ and the guys were really into it, so they ended up putting it in their music more often, which really fits the direction they’re going with their music.

Earlier in the year, they got to do a small first tour outside of Finland, when supporting Dear Mother for a handful of gigs in the Netherlands, and Lotta told us that it was amazing with a couple of sold out shows, really nice people both in Dear Mother and the fans that showed up at the gigs, and they loved the Netherlands, which was exceptionally beautiful since it was so bright and sunny and green everywhere. A bit of a vacation away from the cold and white/gray Finland at that time… We tried to figure out if anything crazy happened while they were on tour, but it seems that despite Dear Mother trying to get them to party, that they were rather boring, seems they prefer to do some sports and play video games and go home a bit early. And they even managed to avoid getting any Spinal Tap moments, even though the last venue would have been a perfect place to get lost in since it was quite the maze. And no exploding drummers.

Lastly, we talked a bit about Tuska itself. Lotta checked out and really loved the shows of Make Them Suffer (her personal highlight of the weekend), Bring Me The Horizon and Pendulum. And considering their own (first ever) show at Tuska, she was really looking forward to it, and hoping that it’ll be a good show with plenty of people ready to party with them. And it turned out to be quite the party indeed!
