Interview Rabbit Cult – “Welcome to the Rabbit Cult”

There has been this intriguing entity roaming around in the Finnish music scene that seemed to be hell-bent on blending alternative rock/metal with Kawaii and traditional Finnish instrumentation (like the kantele). Formerly named SARURU, some time last year rebranded into Rabbit Cult, we met up with the two ladies that form this unique project last spring to have a chat about their upcoming music, their mission and whatever else they wanted to talk about…

After a bit of quick chit-chat, we dove right into talking about the recent name change of the project and how it felt like them starting a new chapter or even a new book in their musical journey. They wanted to change the name for quite some time already, because while initially it was a solo endeavor of Saruru, once Marianne joined her, and they became a duo, where it only made sense to rebrand as Rabbit Cult, especially since the rabbit themes were always kind of around.

When we were talking, they were about to release their first song under the new name, called ‘Cute AF’, in which they managed to blend so many different sounds and styles so well that it never felt out of place. On top of the Finnish sounding music, alternative rock/metal and Asian kawaii kind of stylings, they even managed to fit in some saxophone. That saxophone was done by their dear friend Laura Hellander, and while she initially only was supposed to play the riff of the song, she ended up doing a whole solo because it sounded so good. Like Saruru was saying, she was definitely glad to not have stuck with a MIDI sample.

There is also a lot of meaning behind ‘Cute AF‘, calling out a society that still sees women’s bodies as public property, but even influenced by a part of the Finnish epic Kalevala where the hero of the story is harassing a woman called Aino. The song is filled with contradicting things where it’s called ‘Cute AF‘, but then musically and thematically it’s not really cute at all, which they said really fitted with the overall project, calling themselves one big contradiction.

They’ve been working on a lot of new music and mentored by some amazing people, somewhat changing how they do things and it sounded like they have some amazing things for us in the future, both with recordings and live shows. Something we’re all looking forward to here!
