When being at Belgium’s Alcatraz Festival, you’re always sure to get a decent amount of local talent to discover and enjoy. One of those bands, this edition, was a late addition to replace a band that sadly had to cancel. The Belgian heavy metal band Hunter has only been around for about 7 years, but was already gaining a lot of fans with the release of their first self-titled album and some kickass shows. The pandemic somewhat slowed that down, but not the band. They worked on new material and now they’re about to release their sophomore full-length ‘Rebel Angels Rise’, which they’ll be celebrating with a release show at our very own Asgaard venue. So more than enough reasons for us to go sit down with David Walgrave (vocals) and Joost Vlasschaert (guitars) to have a chat about their festival appearance, and the upcoming album!
To begin with, we talked about Hunter playing at Alcatraz 2023 as a late addition and how perfect it was to be put on the La Morgue stage that 2nd day of the festival, that featured a very old school heavy metal line-up. A line-up that Joost was planning to check out for the rest of the day, since many of their musical inspirations were playing there still. On top of that, the location of the La Morgue stage was perfect to lure in people to discover the band, since it’s the first stage people come across when they enter the festival area. So besides the fans who showed up this early for them, quite quickly they gathered a quite sizeable crowd.
So, finally, after about 4 years they get to release their new album ‘Rebel Angels Rise’, which took a bit longer to get finished because of the pandemic hitting the band quite hard. A bunch of really cool shows they had lined up, got cancelled one after the other, and they’re a band who comes together to write new music, so everything came to a halt. It clearly had its effect on the new music, since this time around it’s quite a bit faster and heavier than with the first album, infusing their classic heavy metal sound with quite some speed and thrash metal influences. So now they see it as a brand new chapter for the band, a second kick-start of their career in the hope that they reach more people and get more shows booked.
One show they have already booked for sure, is their release show at our own venue, Asgaard on September 2nd. A show you might not want to miss, especially if you’re looking for a good old school classic heavy metal show inspired by the 80s!
