Interview Balance Breach – “This is the sound of Balance Breach in 2025”

For the past decade, Balance Breach has been establishing themselves as one of the top dogs in the Finnish metalcore scene. Not only have they released 2 stellar full-lengths already, their live reputation is one of the most solid ones around, and they have already gone beyond their own country for shows several times. Now in 2025, they’re about to release their monumental third full-length ‘Save Our Souls’ (out on March 7th via Out of Line Music), so perfect timing to catch up with them again…

We met up with Aleksi Paasonen (vocals) and Antti Halonen (drums) at a bar in Helsinki shortly before their official pre-listening event for ‘Save Our Souls’. They were feeling pretty good, excited to get to talk about the album, and especially looking forward to getting to show what they’ve been working on for the past year or more. Because like Aleksi said, this album fully represents Balance Breach version anno 2025, and they’ve really been wanting to share it with the world.

That said, they already shared over half of the album in singles, showing off the wide diversity of the album and with every track bringing in more people supporting them. Especially when they released ‘Come Undone’, one of their heaviest tracks to date, they really saw things rolling. When they released the very first single ‘Maniacs’ a bit over a year ago, they only had 3 songs worked out of the album. This time around they went about things much differently, where they focused on 3 songs at a time. Writing and recording those first before moving on to 3 more songs. This way they were able to make the tracks the best possible by focusing their time, energy and creativity on just those instead of a complete album. Both Aleksi and Antti found this to be a much better course of action and are very proud on how everything worked out like in the end.

On this album, they’ve basically taken the best of their earlier 2 albums, cranked things up and combined things in such a way that they really elevated the Balance Breach sound into this modern day. They recorded some of the heaviest stuff, while continuing to be melodic and catchy as we know them to be. Aleksi went more extreme with his vocals too, on the one hand going back to where he started with his deep growls, while on the other hand having recorded the most vulnerable vocals ever on ‘Million Miles Away’. Which he sings with a bit more power live, since it’s rather tricky to go that vulnerable after just having screamed his lungs out.

They also had some guests joining them on the album. Philip from Normandie is doing guest vocals on ‘Antidote’, which made total sense since they’ve toured with them before. When reaching out, he was immediately all too happy to contribute, even though it wasn’t just a quick verse, but him singing woven through the whole track. On ‘Strangers In Crime’, they were looking for some female vocals to elevate the song, and their label suggested to ask Melissa from label mates Hand of Juno. Which worked out really well, like Antti was saying, she has one of the best voices out there, both in clean and harsh vocals! On title track ‘Save Our Souls‘, you can also hear a choir bringing the chorus to an epic level, which they reveal is basically Aleksi singing the same thing in different pitches, guitarist Saku and a mysterious female voice, and their producer doing some studio magic with double-layering and pitch-shifting.

At the end, we bring up that we realized that the abbreviation for the album title ‘Save Our Souls’ is “S.O.S.”. Aleksi was adamant that it was all on purpose, joking that he simply is that genius in writing lyrics and songs. He actually confessed that initially he considered naming the song and album “S.O.S.”, but felt that ‘Save Our Souls’ was actually more impactful and memorable. They actually even added the morse code for S.O.S. at the end of the long intro that comes with the title track, a nice little Easter egg to look out for when listening to the album! An epic and cinematic video is coming for that track to celebrate the album’s release, something to look forward to!
