We’ve been keeping a close eye on Balance Breach ever since their debut full-length ‘Dead End Diaries’ released back in 2020, as we felt they were one of the bright lights of the flourishing Finnish metalcore scene. Last year they had a pretty epic comeback to the stages after the pandemic, but they haven’t sat still one bit during that period, of which we now see the result with their second full-length album ‘ABYZMAL’. So right before they had a listening party at On The Rocks in Helsinki a couple of days before the official release on May 26th, we caught up with Aleksi (vocals), Terho (guitar), and Antti (drums) to have a talk about how their 2022 was, and of course the new album!
Starting off light, we had a talk about how amazing their 2022 was, having their first ever shows abroad, playing shows supporting Wargasm in Germany and getting a spot on the line-up of the legendary Summerbreeze festival! The latter was a completely new and totally different experience for them, and to this day it still feels a bit like a dream.
But onwards to the actual reason why we met up: their new album ‘ABYZMAL‘! They’ve been working on the music for quite a while and were obviously excited to get to release the full album finally, besides the earlier released singles. Which all were received really well, they had to say. Their producer was the same as with their debut full-length, but over the years, he learned a lot and really stepped up his game, which reflected onto the sound on this album. And not only he stepped it up, the guys themselves put a lot of effort in writing good songs, allowing the songs to dictate what direction they were going. If they had some good heavy riffs, they didn’t try to force some melody into it, causing the highs to be higher than ever, and the lows being lower than ever. This, and the fact that the whole band seemed to work as one unit, brought their music to the next level where there is a certain cohesion and flow that is definitely an upgrade compared to some years ago.
While the music often sounds kind of uplifting and gets you going, they are actually pretty dark. Aleksi told us that he didn’t necessarily write the commentary on society, mental health and other themes coming from his own experiences, but sort of being a voice for others around him. And he’s hoping that people find something to relate in the songs, or that they don’t feel alone with some of their dark thoughts and feelings.
Following the prelistening party at On The Rocks where we had our chat, they are planning to do a proper release show at the same place on June 17 (find tickets here), and this summer you can find them at Finnish festivals like Nummirock and Dark River Festival! They’re looking forward to seeing you all over the summer or whenever they come to a place near you!
