Interview Assemble the Chariots – “Listen to the album from start to finish, do a service to yourself!”

The Finnish outfit Assemble the Chariots has been turning heads for a moment already with their rather unique style of deathcore that heavily leans on creating an epic and cinematic atmosphere while relentlessly pummeling the listener with music that gets fired at you at a neckbreaking speed. Now they’re about to release their new album ‘Unyielding Night’ (out via Seek and Strike on July 19th), which seems like it’s going to be the next big step up in their sound and the start of something really special. So while both the band and us were at Tuska 2024, we thought it to be an ideal moment to sit down with some of the band members to have a quick chat about that upcoming album.

We met up with Onni Holmström (vocals) and Kevin Apostol (guitars) and had a nice quick chat about how their time at Tuska had been so far and how much they were looking forward to what probably would become a hot and steamy show on the Tuska Kvlt stage later that day. We’ve caught the band before, and it’s always a really intense experience from start to finish, we can promise you that!

But since time was short, we quickly went into talking about their upcoming album ‘Unyielding Night’, touching on the fact that while they always had a rather unique style of deathcore, they took it quite a bit further away from the “deathcore” tag. With which they agreed, because now they actually moved towards the sound they always wanted to accomplish, where it’s more of a blend of different styles with a very cinematic feeling and bringing a movie-like experience. They prefer to call their music “extreme metal” now.

This is an album that you NEED to listen to from start to finish in a whole. Especially vocalist (and lyricist) Onni gets really passionate about that, where he’s been trying to create an as full universe and experience as he could while writing the lyrics, not only putting easter eggs in every song like references to games he likes and or a movie or television series he likes, but he has also crafted a whole backstory and lore that goes behind every song. Basically writing 50 times more than necessary, just for one sentence, painstakingly so, making the majority of the time working on this album with Kevin crafting the universe for this epic.

Kevin, as the main music writer then, talks about his road to the music on this album. It was something they’ve wanted to do straight from the beginning, but he had to study and rehearse writing and composing movie score-like music for years on end, which now finally culminated into what they wanted Assemble the Chariots to be like.

About a week after the release of the album, on July 27th, they will have a release show at On The Rocks in Helsinki, Finland. Which sounds like it’s something you’ll want to be at, because they will play ‘Unyielding Night’ from start to finish with all the samples, visuals and co you may desire brought to the stage to fully experience the universe they’re trying to create. And since this might be a “one-off”, you won’t want to sit on this one.
