Interview Anima Tempo – “With us, you never know what to expect next”

For a second year in a row, Helsinki Techfest brought together bands that are either highly technical and progressive oriented, or have a refreshing new take on genres like metalcore, deathcore and co. The second night of excellent bands was set to be opened by the Mexicans of Anima Tempo, a band that brings a brand of progressive metal that often veers into djenty territories and incorporates surprising elements, samples and other unexpected genres. Helsinki Techfest was the first stop of their European tour, that would also bring them to our own venue Asgaard in Belgium as special guests of Dyscordia. So we made sure we met up with some of the guys at the event in Finland to have a quick chat about their tour and music…

After their excellent show, we caught up with Dante (guitars), Gian (guitars & clean vocals) and Pavel (bass) in one of the back corridors of the venue to have chat. They were quick to point out that they loved being back in Europe and really enjoyed their show at Helsinki Techfest. It was a pleasure to see how many people showed up this early to come and see Anima Tempo and they were really appreciative of the energy they got from the crowd. This is after all quite the endeavor for them to come all the way from overseas to play shows in Europe, so all the support and positive energy they get from people on the way is really welcome.

For us, Anima Tempo was a bit of a surprise discovery, and we expressed how enjoyable we found all the different kinds of samples and unexpected music genres in their music. During the show we saw some people getting really excited when they went into a bit of a jazz intermezzo in one of the songs, and the arcade game inspired song ‘Digital Heart’ has quickly become one of our favorite songs of theirs. Musically and at live shows, they try to never do exactly the same, to keep the surprise and excitement going.

Talking about ‘Digital Heart’: in the music video you can see them play a video game with them as the playable characters. Which was just an animation made for the video, but they did look into making it into an actual game. Right now they don’t have the funds or time to get it worked out, but we’re all crossing our fingers that it’ll come some day! They also told us that they are working on new music and are figuring out the concept around which they’ll create the new songs. Dante unveiled that he’s working on possibly incorporating influences and sounds of 80s horror movie soundtracks, which sounds really exciting and interesting to us. Something to look forward to for sure!
