Iceland’s Drungi calls you to dance with darkness in ‘Myrkur’
Icelandic hard rock/metal sensation Drungi is making waves with their upcoming debut album “Hamfarir Hugans”, set to be released on April 5th. As a prelude to this highly anticipated release, the band has dropped their first single, “Alda”, which hit the airwaves in late 2023 to critical acclaim. They continue that momentum with the second single “Myrkur” (Dark), constructed with a heavy waltz simulating a dance macabre with the darkness, which reflects the element of the song. They explain further:
“We don’t know what happens in the darkness and how it will affect our life, and that’s the scary idea that happens in the musical part of Myrkur. Depression, You can let the darkness control you but you must remember to turn on the light that only oneself can turn on. The darkness can be obsessive but it is dangerous if it’s used wrong on others and yourself.”
“Myrkur” is a song that was originally inspired by one of Drungi‘s earliest demos that did not make the cut for the album. The song tracks the feeling of darkness and depression that we all feel inside of us, some feel it stronger, others have an easier time finding the light, “but we are the Darkness and we want you to join us”.
The release of “Hamfarir Hugans” marks Drungi’s fifth year together, and promises an emotional rollercoaster with tracks like the isolating “Ófærð” (Impass) and the desolate “Þoka” (Fog). The album’s themes delve into mental health issues, mirroring the band members’ personal struggles. All lyrics are in Icelandic, connecting with the harsh environments that locals have navigated since the island’s inception.
“Myrkur” is an invitation to dance within the darkness and is recommended for fans of Skálmöld, Black Sabbath, and Gojira.
“Hamfarir Hugans” is due out on April 5, 2024, and is available for pre-order at https://drungi.bandcamp.com.
