Tonight is the night that comedy and rock music come together and become one. It’s a first time for me to see the D, and the rumors are that it’s going to be a night to remember. Let’s see if that’s the case.
Steel Beans
The supporting band for tonight was Steel Beans. I’ve had never heard of them and was maybe expecting more than one person to come on stage. But there was only one. One man by the name of Jeremy DeBardi that conquered it all by himself. He sat behind the drums with a drum stick in his right hand, got a guitar where he played the notes with his left hand, and hit the drums while he strummed the guitar. On top of that, he also sang and all together it sounded awesome. In some songs, he needed the keyboard to play some beats for him. But if this man would have more than two arms, I have no doubt he would add more instruments to the show.
Steel Beans plays classic rock ’n roll that keeps you moving. He is well known in America, but has yet to conquer Europe. Check him out in the video below.
Tenacious D
Then it was time for where we’ve all been waiting for: Tenacious D entered the stage. The crowd had been loud since the beginning and knew every word. From the start, the room felt energetic and ready to be entertained. And that is exactly what the D did. They started with Kickapoo from their movie Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny. The movie opens with that song, and so did this show. We all know actor and singer Jack Black, but it became clear immediately that guitar player Kyle Gass is a very good singer himself.
There were loud bangs of metal being smashed together. Listening closely, they sounded like footsteps. Footsteps who came closer and closer. A giant metal robot came walking on stage. He was made from metal, so the song The Metal was very fitting. We all sang along, and the robot showed its moves to the crowd.
The sax-a-boom piece where Jack Black plays a toy trumpet has gone viral on the internet by now, and we all know it by heart. It happened at this show too. I thought I knew what was going to happen, but there was a surprise waiting for us. What we didn’t know is that Kyle Gass plays the bigger and better sax-a-boom, or Max-a-boom as they called it. The crowd went wild once again, and it was an amazing part of the show.
When the first notes were played for Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown), the crowd went wild, as did I since it’s my favorite Tenacious D song. So much happened during that song. There was a big devil that rose in the back of the stage. There was some pyro going on, be it at the wrong moments in time. Just before Beelzeboss they joked about the pyro not working as intended and got the guy that was in charge of the pyro on stage to talk about it with him. This added some extra comedy to the show.
We also got to hear two new songs with ‘Video Games’ and ‘The Spicy Meatball song’, I guess that’s where the tour got its name from. Besides a musician and an actor, Jack Black also has his own YouTube channel where he plays video games called Jablinski Games. He’s also a character in the remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2. The album those two songs will be on is rumored to be released in 2024.
Throughout the show, roadies would run up and down the stage to adjust the tiniest things to make the show perfect. Tenacious D dedicated their song ‘Roadie’ to them and also called them on stage when they were introducing the whole band. After everybody got their well deserved applause, it was time for the encore, including another favorite of mine from the movie; ‘Master Exploder’. Ending on the perfect comedic closer ‘Fuck Her Gently’, this comedy rock show came to its end. It’s safe to say that everybody went home smiling that day. Also, if everybody would have a little bit of Jack Black’s energy, the world would be a happier place. The way he runs around on stage and uses his facial expression is amazing.

Throughout the show they had the perfect variety of songs from their movie, as well as their self-titled album ‘Tenacious D’ and ‘Rize of the Phoenix’. Tenacious D uses a lot of comedy in their show. If you want to watch a music show with lights and stuff, this band is not for you. If you are in for a comedy show combined with music that gives you a good laugh, then this is the perfect match.
