Gig Reports
Finnish melodic death metal legends Insomnium are back with the epic new album ‘Anno 1696’ and had to celebrate this properly. So here we are: 2 completely sold out nights at the legendary rock club Tavastia in Helsinki where fans were gathering to get to enjoy some of the new tracks live for the very first time, together with some classics and fan favorites. With them, they brought the new doom collective The Abbey to get the already excited crowd in the right mood for a killer Insomnium show.

Finally, after postponing his tours on the one hand due to corona issues, on the other hand because he had the opportunity to go on tour with Dream Theater, our Canadian master mind half comedy guy Devin Townsend is here in support of his new album Lightwork. On this tour he brings with him the Norwegian band Fixation, which I unfortunately missed, and the French dudes of Klone

When the kings of German thrash metal Kreator and the American pioneers of New Wave of American Heavy Metal Lamb Of God decided to go together on the “State Of Unrest” tour throughout Europe, no one could expect that it would take 3 years before it could finally happen. As always nothing can stop the music, this was going to be one of these evenings you will never forget.

Three years we had to wait for this concert, three f*cking long endless years! Just as with any postponed gratification – you know what I am talking about – the expectations only raise higher, and sometimes they raise too high. Was this the case with Wardruna you may wonder? Absolutely not! That concert was literally and figuratively divine.

After an earlier attempt by Gaerea in April last year to take over a stage in Finland, and an exceptional new album released last year as well with ‘Mirage’, we were really excited to finally catch these black metal stars on the rise on a stage near us. At the beginning of February the time was finally there, and we were clearly not the only ones that had been looking forward to seeing this Portuguese outfit live, since On The Rocks was completely sold out. With the addition of local black metal act Venenum Dei, it promised to be an intense evening and one for the books of hosts Nem Agency and Loose Mind Productions.

When one of my all-time favorite modern metal bands shows up at a venue near me, like Trivium, I simply need to be there. And them bringing along the German metalcore legends Heaven Shall Burn as co-headliners, the death metal mastodon that is Obituary and Malevolence, the UK hardcore band that has become one of my favorite recent discoveries as openers, only solidified me need to be there. At a pretty much sold out Culture House in Helsinki, we were in for a great night of metal in one of Helsinki’s nicest venues…

Well this is quite a diverse line up! From the progressive music of Wilderun , who were on the road to support their release Epigone, to the more melodic death metal oriented Soilwork , who were supporting their Övergivenheten album, and the old school death metal of Kataklysm , also in support of their 2020 release Unconquered, this kickoff gig of their European tour has the full potential to become quite interesting.

A lot of bands of the 90s seem to relive their youth these days. This is also the case for the groove metallers of Life Of Agony who are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their masterpiece debut album River Runs Red. Their old time friends of Prong accompanied them on the road together with the female fronted band Tarah Who? That this was going to be an evening to remember was written in the stars.

It’s a fact: the first concert of 2023, at least for me, has happened. And what a banger to start with. Alestorm playing in a small venue that fit about 1500 people, you don’t see that very often. And when you do, you take your pirate hat and sword and party with them!
