On April 19th and April 20th, the long awaited concert from Electric Callboy finally happened. And man, I wasn’t the only one who was excited. Two sold out show dates and a crowd that went wild form the first note to the last one. It was amazing. Let me talk you through the night.

Saturday night at The King of Clubs was a beautiful night for a concert! I feel like everyone was charged up from the gorgeous day and ready to rock! Upon arrival at the club, we were once again greeted with friendly faces.  Jaron Gulino, who plays bass for Tantric, graciously took care of us and put us on the media list. We were given our credentials and headed into the 2 story club. This was our second time at this venue, so we were familiar with the set-up. With the nice weather, the patio was open and was enjoyed by all this evening.

When I discovered Author & Punisher back in 2018 at Blowup festival in Helsinki, I was blown away with the uniqueness and creativeness of the project. The industrial doom that Tristan Shone literally bangs out with his machinery is damn-right impressive, captivating and one of a kind. So whenever A & P is in the neighborhood, you can count on me being there if it’s any bit possible. Looking at the usual industrial fare that Elektrik Products usually brings to Finland, I was kind of surprised to see this act being booked by them but hey, I’m not complaining. They fleshed out the line-up of the night with their friends of Eggvn and Pedigree, turning it into a promising night of harsh beats and heavy music.

Insomnium, forerunners of the Finnish melodeath scene hasn’t been very lucky the past couple of years, having to cancel and postpone tour after tour, including the Finnish tour they had planned with very special guests Finntroll a while back already. Now finally we’re here and the show is happening! Kulttuuritalo was the place to be, for us the first time to catch a show like this at the Helsinki Culture House!

Finally she’s back! Almost 5 years ago I had the pleasure to see Eivør Pálsdóttir for the first time live since discovering her with the enchanting ‘Trøllabundin’ track. Now the lovely Eivør is back to play at exactly the same venue I saw her last: legendary Helsinki rock club Tavastia. With in the mean time yet another album under her belt with 2020’s ‘Segl’, it’s a show I’ve been looking forward to for a long time now. With her she brought the Danish funky alt-pop artist Lucky Lo to warm us up for her sweet and mesmerizing music and storytelling.

In 2020, Brother Firetribe released their latest album ‘Feel The Burn’, which was the first one without founding member and guitar virtuoso Emppu Vuorinen. We had a lovely conversation with vocalist Pekka shortly before the official release (find the interview here), but didn’t get the chance since then to catch them on a stage with their new music. So now that Master Events was bringing them around Helsinki to the legendary Tavastia rock club for a show, we really didn’t want to miss out on a night of upbeat AOR and melodic rock. With them they brought the up-and-comers of One Desire to warm up the crowd and we knew it was going to be good…

Piere’s in Ft. Wayne, Indiana was stop #2 on Fozzy‘s ‘Save the World Tour’. Piere’s is a legendary live concert venue located in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and was closed for a bit but re-opened last year. It had been a long time since we had stepped into this venue but they had not disappointed us in the past and we were expecting a great show with Fozzy, along with support from the GFM band, KrashKarma and The Nocturnal Affair. This ‘April Fool’s Day’ rock show was certainly the real deal and no joke!

It’s not all too common for good industrial acts to strike down in the metal-loving country that is Finland, so when the opportunity arises, we tend to jump at it. One good source for such events is the promoter Elektrik Products, who has been bringing some stellar artists through Hellsinki Industrial Festival. But throughout the year they have smaller shows as well and this time they were bringing the brand new show of Nachtmahr for us to experience as one of the first in Europe! With the addition of the Estonian misfits of Freakangel and Finnish duo Miseria Ultima, this was simply a night we could not let pass us by…

It was good to be back out and about! After several years of no gigs, this concert in the Brewer’s Street of the big (and cold) Helsinki Jäähalli venue marked the first one for our photographer Vaim Hull and yours truly to reunite. With the ice skating rink right next to the part of the building we were, that at least explains the cold draft we regularly noticed inside. For me personally it was the first time being here, but I was excited as it was my first gig since pre-corona times. On the menu: Atlas, Port Noir and main act VOLA, all acts that were pretty much unfamiliar to me until shortly before this night. Let’s go!

Another one of those packages that got delayed time after time again due to the pandemic… Bloodred Hourglass was supposed to play in Helsinki with MyGrain, Oceanhoarse and Balance Breach for a couple of years and now finally is the time! Oceanhoarse had to drop out still after all, but got replaced by the doomsters of Marianas Rest, completely a really solid line-up of up-and-coming greats of the Finnish metal scene! Place to be was Vanha ylioppilastalo (or the “old students’ house”), a fancy old building in the center of Helsinki that hasn’t really been the home for metal shows before. And here is how the night went…
