Napalm Death, ‘Campaign For Musical Destruction’ (Trix Antwerp) – 16/2/2020

Napalm Death (****)

Grindcore gods Napalm Death were of course headliners for the night. I’ve rarely seen another frontman who is as entertaining as Barney Greenway. The man’s moves are the stuff of legend. He’s always running around, dancing, and waving his arms about frantically, losing himself on stage. I love seeing him do this. The man stays true to himself in every way. Very inspiring. And in true Barney fashion, he spews out political and moral messages with such anger and passion that they come out in the form of something between a bark and a roar. It’s among the more unique singing styles and it’s instantly recognizable. I’m always happy to see Shane Embury grind the bass like a madman too, even if it feels like I’ve seen more of his other projects than I’ve seen Napalm Death.

It was instantly clear the larger part of the audience was here for them, as the pit exploded immediately upon hearing the first shred. And the fans didn’t stop. The moshing went on for the entire set. All in good fun of course. As Barney said it himself: “love and peace are the only way forward, my friends”. There were a few crowd surfers too, though not too many. It seems the Sunday mood had kicked in and people were less compliant to go full on bonkers as most had to get to work the next day.

We were treated to an awesome setlist that went from all the way back to their first album ‘Scum‘, to a few songs of EP’s, to the more recent records. Napalm Death could of course not say goodbye without playing a few cover songs, such as the classic – and personal favorite – ‘Nazi Punks Fuck Off‘ by the Dead Kennedys and the Sonic Youth cover ‘White Cross‘. You’ll find the full list below, in case you want to prepare for the remaining tour dates.
