Life Of Agony “River Runs Red 30th Anniversary World tour” ( Viernulvier, Ghent) – 17/11/2023

The anniversary celebration of the iconic album ‘River Runs Red’ brought Life Of Agony together with their soulmates of Prong and the French rockers of Tarah Who? to the viernulvier venue in Ghent, formally known as ‘De Vooruit’.  It has been a long time since there were some metal performances in this beautiful concert venue, it looks like that they rediscovered what an ideal place this is for witnessing hyper intense concerts. I saw the same package last year in the Black Lab in Lille (FR) and that was quite intense as well, so wondering how this evening will go.

Tarah Who?

The opener was again Tarah Who?, this French Canadian woman has been making a name for herself for a while now. Unfortunately, I was only able to see two songs, thanks to the traffic jam around Ghent. Since the last time, the drummer has been replaced by someone new and there was also more percussion in the songs. Their style can best be described as wild rock ‘n roll, with no shortage of stage presence and eagerness. However, the songs sometimes have little to offer, which was also noticeable in the cold response from the audience.

Prong

Prong has been on the road for much longer and seems to never give up. Tommy Victor and his partners in crime always give us a rock solid performance with killer songs and grooves, a good example of this can be found on their new album State Of Emergency. The set they brought was the best of, supplemented with some newer songs. Classics such as Test, Unconditional, Beg to differ, Cleansing shows what craftsmanship Tommy Victor exhibits in terms of songwriting and stage presence. Only… what was wrong with the Belgian audience, no mosh pits, little reaction, Prong didn’t deserve this. Snap your fingers could bring some ambiance to the shack, but all in all the audience was far too lame, which was becoming visibly irritating to the members of Prong. Nevertheless, a class performance from them.

Setlist:

Test
Whose Fist Is This Anyway?
Non-Existence
Beg to Differ
Unconditional
Ultimate Authority
Cut-Rate
Breaking Point
Another Worldly Device
Broken Peace
Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck
The Descent

Life Of Agony

A room filled to the brim that mainly showed up for the gentlemen (and ladies) of Life of Agony. It was a party from the very first notes, stagedivers from left to right, the glory of the early days of Life Of Agony was back. River Runs Red is an iconic album, it was played in its entirety as it is on the CD. Mina Caputo was in top shape, it remains a relief to see how the transformation has made her a different person, if you know how before they used to wander on stage, now she is an energy bomb with a lot of attention for the audience. At one point, two teenagers were brought onto the stage from the front because it became too intense for them, they were then allowed to continue watching the performance from the side, a dream come true for these kids.

Almost the entire band dived into the audience, except guitarist Joey-Z. Yes, Cindy too, the drummer came from behind her drum kit to go ahead with the stagedivers. There were not many negatives, hearing this album live again is very nice, especially if it is supplemented with Lost at 22 and Regret. After an hour and a half, it was time to end the fun. The audience could look back on an excellent performance and go home satisfied.

This celebration is a bull’s eye hit with excellent performances from Tarah Who?, Prong and Life Of Agony. Although the audience could have gone a bit more wild with all the bands, River Runs Red remains a very strong album after all this time. Nice to hear and see, although I would like to hear some newer work from Life Of Agony. We’ll see what happens…
