The Devin Townsend Project is kicking off their European tour in support of the Transcendence album in Antwerp. Being first scheduled in the club of the Trix then moved to the bigger hall due to high demand of tickets and even achieve to sell this out is quite unique. This evening couldn’t go wrong. Our Norwegian friends of Leprous (****) had the task to get the audience warmed up for the crazy Devin. The house was already fully packed, something you don’t see that much for support bands. For me it was the first time that I saw Leprous and it has been a nice welcome. The vocals did remind me a bit of Zornik and Arid but the drive was much better. The audience liked the versions of The Price, The Cloak and Slave very much, just to name a few. Their warming up set was quite successful and I’m sure they have won some hearts.

The magically Canadian music genius Devin Townsend (*****) is becoming more and more popular these days, and that for, as he self said a mid forty man who can only make cheesy music . With songs like Stormbending, Failure and Rejoice the opening of the show couldn’t get any better. What a sound , what a presence, not only from Devin himself, but from the whole band, from Ryan to Beav to Mike to Dave , this band is one hell of a well oiled machine.
Still struggling from the jetlag of the 9 hours flight and getting from normal life to the tour life , it didn’t withhold Devin from getting more and more into the show and began entertaining the audience with his stupid jokes between and during the songs. Continuing with excellent versions of Hyperdrive, Where We Belong and of course some Ziltoid couldn’t be left out (Ziltoid Goes Home). Then there was a surprise, they played a song they never played before, Suicide from Accelerated Evolution. Ending the set with March Of The Poozers and Kingdom , where Devin showed again what a voice he has, it was definitely clear that the audience wanted more. It wouldn’t be Devin if he didn’t do it his way to go to the encores. Just saying that it’s now time to do the encores and some stupid stuff about how uncomfortable he feels at the moment, that he has been farting during the whole show and then leaving the stage almost as the Hunchback Of Notre Dame. As the first encore we got Devin to do an acoustic sing-a-long with the audience , namely Ih-Ah, accompanied with ‘Scorpions‘ lighters, which eventually led to an incredible funny version. The show came to an end with a superb version of Higher.
This was quite an entertaining evening like we are used from him, if you have the chance to check him out, he’s playing on the Saturday of the Graspop weekend, just do it, you will for sure have a good laugh.
