While I was sick at home, Graspop Metal Meeting had already started. I couldn’t just ignore the fact that Graspop was happening on the other side of the country. Luckily, Graspop does live streams for a lot of bands, and I was able to view some from the comfort of my couch. These are my experiences of the first festival day, “from home edition”:

Day 4 and the end is in sight, just a few more hours to go!

Time to take stock -this festival has been brilliant for a number of reasons;

a) The organisation has been superb. I have had no problems getting in or out of either the main building or the smaller venues inside. In most cases the bands have gone onstage and finished at the advertised times.  It has also been good that you can come and go as you please, food and drink is obviously cheaper outside the venue.

b) No problems with security at all that I have seen. I know that some people are moaning about it but I think security has been great.

c) Blackpool itself, not a great place, but any locals I have come into contact with have been really nice

d) The people attending have been so good natured. Everyone is just here for the music and a great time. I did think the majority of attendees would bold men, but there are all sorts attending. Good to see so many South Americans that punk really means something to.

Day 3 dawns and it’s all beginning to catch up with me. The late nights drinking into the early hours are beginning to take its toll. The atmosphere in the pubs is really good though so you just get caught up in it all. You are having such a great time, especially as this hasn’t happened for a couple of years, you just want to savour it all.

After grabbing breakfast it’s time to take my usual walk to Club Casbah.

Rebellion, the biggest punk festival of all is held at the awesome Winter Gardens in Blackpool, UK. The Winter Gardens is truly a huge building full of different performance spaces. Rebellion festival  encompasses many different activities. There is a cinema, acoustic stage, spoken word area as well as bars, eating places and market places for merchandise stalls.

You can find so much to see and do but so little time to do it in. There are so many performances that harsh decisions need to be made as to who to see and who to miss. This year there is also the addition of a huge outdoor space on the seafront featuring yet even more bands.

So many bands (and fans) attend from all over the world. It is, therefore, a great chance to see bands that you are unfamiliar with and would not normally get the chance to see.

We’re back! After all the years of cancelations, Tuska is finally happening again! With a hunger for one of our favorite festivals, and a very solid lineup consisting of a combination of rebookings from the canceled editions, surprising additions, and plenty of attention for local talents, we felt almost as excited as when we went to our very first Tuska back in 2016! After 2 rather exhausting days with memorable shows of quite a few bands, we were really looking forward to the usually more chill Tuska Sunday to slowly fade out of the festival weekend. There were still some very promising bands that would hit us with some killer shows, though!

The summer festival season has finally properly started after 2 years of barely anything! And while the established festivals all seem to be returning, there’s always room for new guns. And if they come with a cool and different concept like Hellsinki Metal Horizons, we can’t help but get excited. With a truly eclectic mix of both extreme, progressive and straight out left field bands, they were aiming to attract a similarly eclectic crowd and widen people’s horizons. Which seems to have worked admirably.

We ended up missing out on both Omnivortex and Kalmah, only catching the last song of the latter, but that didn’t change our excitement on what was to come still…
