Veterans of Greek black metal outfit Yoth Iria carved their names on the pantheon with bassist Jim Mutilator (ex-Rotting Christ, and ex-Varathron) at the helm of the band, and guitarists Nikolas Perlepe and Naberius, drummer Vasilis Stavrianidis and vocalist HE. They continue their Hellenic version of black metal in the third studio album “Blazing Inferno” which delivers a palate of epic riffs and bombastic keyboards Yoth Iria doesn’t only capture the glorious sound of Greek black metal with the composition, but they have also achieved unprecedented mastery.

The opening track “Blazing Inferno” displays the grandeur of epic rhythm guitars and a slightly modern polished sound that takes a majestic direction, you will be mistaken to think that Yoth Iria has strayed from its black metal roots. Jim Mutilator dives deep into the black metal spectrum; the composition combines catchy melodic riffs with the guitar leads backing the thundering percussion, and the album slays in every way possible.

The mesmerizing epic atmosphere is gripping from the blasting drums in the following song “But Fear Not” which injects effective dynamic riffs, despite the subtle nuances of Rotting Christ, Jim Mutilator managed to bring something compelling to fans. The guitars and synth merge perfectly while the musical background incorporates the Greek folk melodies, the mid-paced songs in the album are diverse as they add a demonic theme to the music.

The booming guitars in the song “In the Tongue of Birds” ignite like blazing thunder showing the creative songwriting, despite sounding like Modern Greek black metal bands, Yoth Iria accentuates the work of the guitars, and the demonic vocalization is prominent. The riffing is melodic and heavy, while the rasping vocals are powerful and dominant throughout the album.

The heavier and dynamic tone of the guitars often fuse with the haunting background of the keyboards cutting through the booming bass guitar, Yoth Iria maintains the majestic showdown and captures the classic feel of Rotting Christ’s past albums like “Triarchy of the Lost Lovers”.

Blazing Inferno” conveys plenty of supercharged epic moments in numerous songs like “Rites of Blood and Ice” therefore, it is fair to describe the album as majestic and bombastic. The quality of the rhythm guitar surrounds the album and never strays away from the general sound of Yoth Iria.

Despite that the band took an atmospheric direction, the third album is distinctive and managed to create an engaging dark atmospheric opus full of zeal and swaggering guitar riffs; Jim Mutilator wrote some of his best studio works in the tradition of the classic Hellenic black metal.

Purgatory Revolution” is full of galloping riffs the melodic and folk elements of this song shine; the veterans know when to inject aggression, though the third album isn’t a straightforward black metal. The rhythm guitars provide plenty of emotions and atmosphere funneled throughout the album, the tremolo-picked riffs are utilized when necessary and there are moments when the riffs become complex.

There is a perfect balance of combining the heavy riffs with epic melodies in the song “Mornings of the One Thousand Golds”. While the song bursts into some grinding drum beats the guitar melodies show the knack of fusing polished guitar riffs; Yoth Iria defines how modern black metal should sound without the boring and overused theatrics they have depicted their signature sound.

The final two songs “Our Father Rode Again His Ride” and “We Call upon the Elements” demonstrate the organic song structure from the fusion of ancient Hellenic folk melodies to the layered synth in the background backed by grandiose heavy riffs, these elements have been perfected by Jim Mutilator and the rest of the band. The latter is an excellent example of creating a dense feeling with the heavy riffing and double bass, the tempo immediately becomes catchy and expands into the epic dark riffs and the flowing ambiance.

Despite the short length of the album Yoth Iria managed to strike the chords by displaying incredible musical performance, the closing moments of this final epic track provide a complex and layered guitar work.
