Wolfheart is by now an established name in the Finnish (melodic death) metal scene, formed in 2014 by Tuomas Saukkonen. This new EP follows after the release of their fifth full-length ‘Wolves Of Karelia’. ‘ Wolves Of Karelia’ told the story of the Finnish army during the Winter War and this new EP ‘Skull Soldiers’ goes further down that road, telling the story of a small special warfare unit of powerful Finnish soldiers who painted skulls and skeletons onto their helmets during the Winter War. The music continues to embody the aura of freezing winter temperatures and the crushing weight of the Finnish army, never willing to surrender. Let’s go and check out the two songs.
The EP kicks off with title track ‘Skull Soldiers’; an epic song with a really heavy sound that continues where their fifth album ended, but creating a whole new dimension at the same time. ‘Hereditary’ is a massive fast and brutal song but still has that signature melodic sound. It is a real shame that this EP only has 2 new songs, because this makes me want more.
But the fun is not over yet cause we got treated with 2 rarities. First is an acoustic version of ‘Aeon Of Cold, the opening track of their second full-length from 2015: ‘Shadow World.’ I have to be honest, I usually don’t like it when they make an acoustic version of a death metal song. The brutality in the song is gone and you never have the same feeling with an acoustic version. But this is not the case this time around with this beautiful acoustic version. Tuomas succeeds in giving this acoustic version a very dark and cold atmosphere, together with the beautiful voice of Lauri Silvones who plays the bass. Who would’ve guessed he has such a beautiful singing voice! And then the EP wraps up with a flawless live version of ‘Reaper’ from their latest full length ‘Wolves Of Karelia’, recorded during their virtual concert stream performance that aired in early 2020.
The EP ‘Skull Soldiers’ is available in digital and strictly limited vinyl edition, ‘Skull Soldiers’ is a must have for the die hard and new Wolfheart fans starving of cravings until the band’s next offering.
