Little is known of the duo consisting of SMN and BST that makes Verheerer. Having produced only one EP before “Maltrér“, this duo managed to bring out another devastating release. This time under the banner of Vendetta Records instead of their own. Based in Flensburg (Germany) and in existence since 2008, they’ve released the very pleasing “Archar” EP back in 2015 and have now released their first full length album. It comes as no surprise that the name Verheerer translates to “Devastator” when listening to “Maltrér“.
The intro track “Oratio” starts the album off in a sinister way with a slow-paced guitar riff backed by a choir, setting the atmosphere just right for the start of the second track.”Kultyst” blazes some surprisingly melodic riffs, while still attaining the grim and cold character of black metal, and sets the tone for the rest of the album.
Verheerer seems to be able to balance out the usual shredded guitar riffs and blast beats with slower parts and interesting drum riffs quite well. The vocals range from hateful screams to demon-summoning chanting as can be heard in “Vertigo” and “Anima Sola“. All in all, this is an album well worth the listen and it made me wonder if the band members have any previous projects that got them the experience to be able to produce this record.
