Even though “Therizo” doesn’t offer anything new to fans of black metal the seven tracks plus intro and outro take a dynamic and mid-tempo approach, the band is talented at bringing a furious edge to the songs. The strong performance of the drummer J. on the album is the tip of the iceberg, with their malefic spiteful music the trio emphasizes aggressive black metal. Once the album’s intro settles in the menacing and somewhat tribal suspense, the focus on blast beats in the next song “Congregation of the Unholy” spew venomous blackness. The guitars find a perfect balance between the arpeggio and blistering tremolos, creating a pitch-black vibe.
Although some of you might be familiar with the Swiss atmospheric black metal band AARA, the music on this debut is diabolic and combines the typical black metal aggression. The destructive cannons of hellfire are widely displayed on the following track “Sigd” and inject sulfurous riffs into the raging tempo. The drums on the other hand, provide a massive wall of sound, maintaining a powerful barrage of blast beats, furious tempos, and rhythmic guitar patterns to the composition. The classic black metal tremolo lines and melodies are dispersed showing the talent of guitarist B. However, it becomes clearer that the band possesses some unique elements in achieving such a performance.
The songs often include some notable variation in the pacing of the drums and heavy guitar barrages that are usually followed by piercing tremolo and catchy hooks to create a dark and menacing tone. “Reek of the Earth” blends all the different elements into the composition with the blasting drums having a brutal and crushing effect, the bass guitar being mostly audible the production is crisp and energizing. The role of vocalist R. contributes to an ultra-vicious kind of growls, adding to the sinister feel of the guitars. There are some organic grooves and misanthropic melodies which are laden with blazing riffs.
Taubrą rides the raging maelstrom thrusting through the gates of hell and lashing furiously but still manages to keep the spirit of the music flowing through heavy tempos as the guitar and the drums bring some variety to “Dire Necropolis”. The vocals have classic black metal growls, and they sound very deep and appealing, especially in the slower tempo of the songs where the guitars add such an atmospheric and hypnotic melody.
While other songs like “Rembrandt of Death” hit extremely hard and show how the band can play fast and aggressively. The tremolos on the other hand inflict a cold and unholy atmosphere upon the listener and contain some catchy hooks. Taubrą contrived a furious mixture of traditional black metal in the debut album, one of the highlights is the track “Vale of Taubrą“ which was released as a single.
Begins at a furious pace with the blast beats onslaught, and high-pitched growls sounding viciously evil, yet cold and maintaining the typical black metal atmosphere. The riffing madness is unleashed by fast tremolo-picked riffs drawing from the Swedish and Norwegian styles.
There are some hints from bands like Ondskapt, Ofermod, and Watain, but the songs are defined by the technical skills of the guitars and the unique display of the instrumentation. The final track “Therizo” is driven by swift tremolo lines, double bass drums, and heavy guitar flurries, the slower parts are damned catchy and have such a profound atmosphere. The melodic segments of the guitars are very inspiring, but they also have the characteristic sound of AARA which simply creates impressive hooks.
