In between live shows for Wolves in the Throne Room and his work with the promising newcomers in funeral doom Lycus, Oakland based skinbasher Trevor Deschruyver also formed a duo with the mysteriously monikered Cyn M, dubbed Silence in the Snow.

Not so much a metal project of any kind, it is by no means less moody. The two came up with their debut LP ‘Break in the Skin’ in 2016. This was a collection of ethereal, yet minimalistic dream pop.

The sophomore follow up has expanded upon that sound with the inclusion of live drums. A logical step considering Trevor’s pedigree. In fact, you’d wonder why they did not go this way that from the start.

The upgraded sounds brings in some fire to the dreamy compositions. It recalls both the gothic post punk of Siouxsie & the Banshees and Joy Division as well as the typical 4AD sound of early Dead Can Dance.

Cyn takes care of both the guitars and the vocals. Her singing not only spans across heavenly spheres like you would find with Lisa Gerard, but she also adapts craftily to the batcave rock . In that way she reminds of a Monica Richards in her likewise ability to move effortlessly between these 2 styles in her own outfit Faith & The Muse.

‘Levitation chamber’ stills keeps a stripped minimal approach, but the drums force the song to drive forward, hurrying along Cyn’s lyrics without giving them a chance to linger around her own melancholic guitar melodies.
