First, we will encounter the six newly released songs, starting with ‘Wolves of War’. It starts of calm with a medieval sounding intro track. That soon goes into the classic Powerwolf sound: fast strumming riffs followed by the melody of the lead guitar, which is then followed by the loud and clear voice of lead singer Attila Dorn.
‘Sainted by the Storm’ opens with vocal lines before the organ played by Falk Maria Schlegel takes the lead. The chorus has a Sabatonesque sound: the vocals are powerful and march strongly forward.
‘With No Prayer at Midnight’ Powerwolf created another iconic song. It’s catchy and will stay in your head immediately. Yet it’s also very powerful and straightforward. The choruses blast out of your speakers, while there are subtle parts in between that add a lot of detail to the song.
‘My Will Be Done’ is known as one of the most intense tracks in the band’s history. The drums by Roel van Helden are loud and fast, the organ fills the background while Attila’s voice is carried on top of fast strumming guitars throughout most of the song. In the breakdown it changes the pace of the song by long and deep guitar strums followed by a fast guitar solo.
‘Altars on Fire’ is another faster, upbeat song. Just before the last chorus, the song takes time to breathe and let the music speak. After that, the guitar solo takes you to one last high before the song finishes. ‘Wolfborn’ starts with music and vocals taking turns to speak, before they all join forces together. An intense song with lower guitars and more lower parts from Attila than we usually get. This time, the organ takes the solo on top of a bed of electric guitars.
The next four songs are tracks that are previously released, but either they were regional or on a limited edition of a cd. Now they are here together for us to enjoy.
‘Stronger Than the Sacrament’ and ‘Living On a Nightmare’ were both only available on strictly limited samplers and tour EP singles from 2012 and 2015. ‘Midnight Madonna’ was released on an earbook edition of ‘The Sacrament of Sin’, which was released in 2018. Closer of the album ‘Bête Du Gévaudan’ was released exclusively in France as the french version of ‘Beast of Gevaudan’.

REVIEW SCORE
7.4 | Powerwolf continue exploring new ways within their own signature sound. It contains catchy and powerful songs, yet the album is not surprising. If you know the band, you know what this album will sound like. You will not know however, what story the songs will tell and what details will be hidden in there, which is wat makes me come back to Powerwolf every time. |
