Finland’s melancholic doom/death metal act Asphodelus returns with the highly acclaimed sophomore album 'Sculpting from Time' out on August 25th, 2023, via Hammerheart Records. Following the great success of the band’s debut album 'Stygian Dreams' which portrayed an honest tribute to the classic melodic doom metal bands of the nineties. Four years in the making, Asphodelus makes another entry by conjuring a flair of its nostalgic doom death metal style. Even though the first album showed devotion to the likes of Amorphis and Katatonia’s album 'Dance of December Souls' the haunting keyboards and the doom-laden riffs brewed something archaic.

U.K.’s epic doom metal act Godthrymm returns with a stunning new album 'Distortions' out via Profound Lore Records on August 18th, 2023. The band is comprised of renowned members such as vocalist/guitarist Hamish Glencross (ex-My Dying Bride and ex-Solstice), keyboardist and vocalist Catherine Glencross, drummer Shaun Taylor-Steels (ex-My Dying Bride, ex-Anathema and ex-Solstice) and bassist Sasquatch Bob. However, in the past few years the band has experienced a deep cohesion in the songwriting level and an impressive approach to doom metal giving us some deeper depth in the songwriting.

Hailing from North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, Night Eternal is a newcomer to the genre of heavy metal who pay a fitting tribute to the 80s era. The German outfit seems to be in the current revival intention and have succeeded to achieve a convincing mixture of a traditional sound. The five-piece released its debut EP “The Night Eternal” in 2019 sculpting their sound with such a trademark glamour. Shortly after, they released their first studio album “Moonlit Cross” in 2021 to make a strong impression by adding a theatrical aesthetic to their music.

Two of the best labels in the underground scene, Dark Descent Records and Extremely Rotten Productions, issued an exclusive split release of Denmark’s death metal band Undergang and U.S. death doom band Spectral Voice on June 9th, 2023. The unique aspect of this split release is presenting the latest material from these two bands. And while many groups within the genre have strived to achieve the putrid sound of Undergang as reaching their peak musically, the center of attention in this split is Spectral Voice’s fourteen-minute monolithic track.

Back in 1985 when Sepultura released its debut E.P. 'Bestial Devastation' the Brazilian juggernauts gave birth to a worldwide legacy that became one of the most original and influential acts in the genre. Sepultura simply grasped the Latin American extreme sound in the rawest and most primitive form of death thrash metal. Thirty-eight years later amid reminiscing the classic era of Sepultura the Cavalera brothers Max and Iggor exert their abilities to re-record the classic debut with the modern technology of today.

Back in the eighties and nineties, Sepultura was as significant and influential as Slayer, Death and Kreator in the underground metal scene. These Brazilian juggernauts rose to international popularity with classic albums like 'Morbid Visions', 'Beneath the Remains' and 'Arise', drawing millions of fans to their old school thrashing dynamics and aggression. Although Sepultura carried on with guitarist Andreas Kisser; who took the helm after the departure of the founding members, Max put together a new, popularized, unique and innovative groove style of metal under the name of Soulfly.

Curse Of Cain's debut album has been a long time in the making. The recording for the album started in 2017, but I've been waiting for this already since 2014, when the bass player of an old favourite band of mine told me about his new project. Therefore, of course, I just had to write a review about this album, even though it not quite my normal genre. So let's not wait any longer and dive right in.

After the somewhat offbeat EP ‘At Wit’s End’ and the surprising collaboration with Thou on ‘Myopia’, Mizmor has returned to more familiar terrain on his new full length ‘Prosaic’.
Compared to their third album ‘Cairn’, this new album is not so much a concept album, but more of a slice of life record, to use Liam Neigbors’ (also known as A.L.N.) own words, which tries to dial down the grandiose and be less self-indulging.
