When ‘Abandon Us’ kicks in and announces the beginning of this new album, we hear the popular Killswitch Engage sound. All these years, a sound that never loses his high quality. But pounding is also a keyword in the KSE dictionary, and that is what ‘Discordant Nation’ does. Remember the emotional songs like ‘My Last Serenade’ or ‘The Arms Of Sorrow?’ Well you can add ‘Aftermath’ to the list of emotional high quality songs. Something that KSE has a patent on is releasing a single to announce the arrival of a new album, but it is always catchy as fuck. Well it’s nothing different for the song ‘Forever Aligned’ that get stuck in your head after just one listen.
One of my favorite tracks on this album is definitely ‘I Believe’ that gives us a message of hope in this dark times. “I believe, there is a hope for better days. I believe, we will conquer what we face.” I must say, strong lyrics. The more brutal songs are saved for the second part of this album. They play it safe with ‘Where It Dies’ but with ‘Collusion’ they go full on brutality. ‘Collusion’ is a beauty when it comes to brutality. Even the chorus is spot on. But it goes even faster and harder with ‘The Fall Of Us’, let’s go all that frustration. There is even time to flirt with a very dark and doomy sound on ‘Broken Glass.’ And with ‘Requiem’ we end an amazing album where emotion and brutality is perfectly spread.
Killswitch Engage gives us after 25 years exactly what we want. A solid metalcore album that ticks all the boxes. A trip never to forget.
