The mid-tempo sections are accompanied by Vilhelm‘s grim screeches (guitars), and melodies woven into the songs which balance the melancholic aspect of songs like “Beyond the Dark Horizon” and “Flight of the Silver Moon”. The guitars drive the music and invoke majesty through frostbitten black metal tempos, despite the songs being played in the mid-tempo style, Grima enhances these songs with folk melodies and a mixture of tremolo picking, synth, and the intertwining elements offering a mystical ride through the Siberian forest.
This makes the sixth album very appealing due to the guitars’ technicality, the drums’ rawness, and the simplicity of the guitars which unfolds repeated riff patterns. Besides incorporating some fine musical embellishments of the slow guitar chords shows the talent for creating a captivating atmosphere; the somber riffs carve deep melancholy. The creative songwriting of Vilhelm and Morbius (guitars) has contributed a sense of epic and atmospheric black metal in the modern style, along with guest members such as Serpentum (guitars), Vlad (drums), and Sergey Pastukh (bayan).
The music is rooted in traditional black metal which allows the subtle layers of rhythm guitars to shimmer and embodiment in riff patterns, the drums stir and erupt like tides of avalanches.
Morbius and Vilhelm engrave their talent as they cleverly weave subtle emotions and convey moments of tranquility by keeping their composition memorable in songs like “Skull Gatherers” and “Impending Death Premonition” which feature guest vocals of Savely Nevzorov and lya Panyukov.
The effective instrumentation and the artistic presentation maintain flawless musical cohesion for this reason “Nightside” imbues an epic and somber black metal grandeur through its interchanging tempos of the blistering paces in the album’s title track “Nightside” bring to fans one of their best studio albums with the 2019 output “Will of the Primordial”.
The album consists of eight songs including one intro and outro, while there is a good deal of harmony and balancing of the folk instruments. Grima treads beyond the vast Siberian forest, each track delivers timeless and captivating compositions and atmospheric tremolos take place in these songs when the slow ethereal guitar chords convey some of the most anguished music Grima has ever composed.
The folk touches within the album are layered with a touch of artistry, therefore there are a lot of elements being added to conjure grim imaginary and profound atmospheric sensibility that often recall the style of Drudkh. Grima perfectly allows the cold, frosty aura of Siberian forest to manifest in these songs.
The tremolo riffs are shredding, and the drums have their moments to blister your ears with scathing blast beats, all these elements like the chord progression, subtle synth, and melodic hooks come into play as each song unfolds with transcendental beauty and grandeur.
“Where We Are Lost” opens with a beautiful instrumental passage without accentuating the dynamics the music gradually allows the glacial themes to flow with the changes in the tempo and riff variations, and the guitars are backed by rhythm Grima managed to set a majestic attribute to these songs and the atmosphere of the tremolo adds an icy feel.
Each song has its touch of ethereal spellbinding majesty especially in the song “Mist and Fog” which unleashes the cold breath of winter the performance reaches the zenith of cohesive musicianship, albeit slow and melancholic, Grima carries its black metal aesthetics through catchy melodies; the cold Siberian vibe of the duo deliver a sorrowful aura with the guitars creating a depressive mood.
