“Never Surrender” is much of a continuation to its predecessor, but the quartet stampedes into a wildfire-like tempo: the songs are fast, relentlessly aggressive, and infectious. The opening track “Never Surrender” fiercely strikes the listener with riffs packed full of aggression. Deströyer 666 shows no signs of weakness, their fiery passion for classic heavy metal and NWOBHM is still as primal as ever. Like a well-oiled machine, “Andraste” takes a fast breakneck speed with blazing solos and battering drums the pacing veers into high gear, excelling in extreme brilliance. The melodies and the tempo have that hallmark of early Bathory, Venom, and Nifelheim and the vocals also capture a wicked demonic pitch that blends clean vocals, the most overt manifestation is where the band maintains its thrash metal roots.
Deströyer 666 has discarded the anthemic ballads which featured on the previous album and took more of a solid thrashy metallic manifestation, therefore the album immediately moves into heavy intensity and this is to say that the melodic side of the band has remained as a strong feature. Locomotive grooves, irresistible rhythm guitars, and crafty guitar riffs perfectly melded with the talent of writing killer riffs.
K.K. Warlust channels his creativity on “Guillotine” where there are many riffs that are wrought by the classic formula of fusing heavy metal that is immediately catchy and full of hooks. Rampage drums unleash evil hysteria moving between dynamic and adrenaline energy, boasting the levels to the climax. There is absolutely no room for fillers “Pitch Black Night” is one of my favorite tracks of the album, and it begins with a catchy rhythm guitars and drums firing in all cylinders. Sinister vocals bolstered by straightforward blackened thrash metal anthems that combine ravenous tremolos fueling the sense of madness. As a result, the guitars fuse vicious riffs, and militaristic drums deliver a thunderous boom, although the sixth album combines incendiary elements that seem to be loud and explosive that leave you feeling stoutness by the tight performance.
Deströyer 666 has outdone themselves as they continue to show their robust thrash metal influence, with the tight guitar lines and searing melodies providing vicious assaults on tracks like “Mirror’s Edge” revealing glorious heavy metal leads. “Never Surrender” expands on “Wild Fire” the songwriting presents plenty of impressive melodies that stem from the lore of 80s metal. Perhaps their most memorable and unique piece is “Grave Raiders” which has some catchy stomping riffs and powerful bass lines, while there’s plenty of swaggering performance within the tempo you should expect lots of guitar booms, gut-punching drums denim, leather, spikes, and heavy fucking metal in your face!
Warlust’s huskier growling vocals sound incredibly powerful there is also a hefty dose of tremolo-picked riffs storming through songs like “Savage Rights”. The trademark melodies of the band are brought with sets of variations as well as the clean anthemic choruses are glued together in harmonic lead guitar sections. The guitars are the most significant quality of Deströyer 666, having said that the vicious black metal vocals are given a menacing tone on “Rather Death” and the tremolo effect comes as an explosive blast from the 80s speed/black metal. Razor-sharp jagged riffs and the savage warmongering brutality unfold the genius of the songwriting, the turmoil builds up over the relentless pounding of the drums providing a backbone when suddenly the female chanting weaves the chorus of the song. Storming into a rebellious riot and raging like a berserker who’s unleashed from the gates of hell clashing against all the torrential uproars.
The flawless rhythm is played with an organic sense and refined melodies propelling the final track “Batavia’s Graveyard”. It is dominated by a galloping rhythm and powerful drums driving the pace and the riffing that captures the magic of NWOBHM. A mid-tempo bluster displaying catchy leads, drums, the fluid interplay of the instruments, and the female vocals in one bombastic and epic mood of menace.
