Dead And Dripping – Blackened Cerebral Riffs

Hailing from Northern New Jersey, Dead And Dripping is a solo project formed in 2016 by Evan Daniele (Sentient Horror, Anal Exorcism, and Vulnificus). Named after Cryptopsy’s song, the third album “Blackened Cerebral Riffs” incorporates the gore and brutal influence from classic death metal acts like Suffocation, Gorguts, Demilich, and Suffocation, and is the first synergy between the multi-instrumentalist and the Asian label Transcending Obscurity Records.

The drumming on this release is relentlessly brutal and organic, but those who crave some nasty drum snares and sick guttural growls should listen to this record. The highlight of the release is the talent of Evan Daniele, who handles all the instruments by himself. The vocals are sickening and very guttural, and similarly, the dichotomy between the audible bass guitar and the jarring riffs makes each track extremely brutal. “Blackened Cerebral Riffs” consists of nine tracks that are triggered by ultra-extreme drumming fills, in the album’s opener “Tragic Ascent of Absurdity’s Pale Moon”. The track offers chunky riffs and the guttural growls have a knack for emulating the froggy growls of Demilich.

“Humanoid Statues Parading Condescending Gestures” is an ultra-technical showpiece that would remind fans of Deeds of Flesh‘s album “Portals To Canaan”. The drumming is incredible, fast, and grinding. Interestingly Dead And Dripping doesn’t repeat the same formula as each track demonstrates hyper technicality. The guitars on this album are chunky and bolstered with non-stop brutal riffing, however, the gory elements maintain the uncanny guttural emission. “Aural Interference with Uncanny Subconscious Frequencies” and “Infinitely Plummeting into Violet Portals of Delusions” expand upon the grisly cover art of the album.

The guttural growls and technical riffing are on display, and Dead And Dripping pulls some of the best elements from old-school brutal death metal. There are also some spacey experimental samples infused in the fabrics of the song structure that makes it quite interesting, the bass guitar is prominent and contributes to the music and provides an extreme layer to the riffing. The fascinating aspect is how the sole member handles the guitars and the drums in such a complex manner, not only that the guitar work can sometimes be very complex and laden with proficient technicality.

The overwhelming brutality of the riffing conveys an unearthly aura that leaves you dazzled by the insistent grinding beats. The rhythm guitars provide a horrific experience and have all the capability to create a bizarre atmosphere. The song arrangements in “Meticulously Unraveling the Serpentine Consciousness” is another focused effort by Evan Daniele, the track excels in a mid-tempo with vicious dual growls. The songwriting took an extremely brutalized formula and pulled some nuances to the songs that feel proportionately technical and old school without sacrificing the overall sound. Even though there isn’t much variety and speaking about the album’s production, it somehow sounds a bit inferior.

Although there are minor complaints about the album in terms of instrumentation especially when the tempo becomes a bit chaotic the riffs and the guttural growls fit perfectly though some of the riffs sound generic and less effective. My general impression of the album is that Dead And Dripping is certainly an above-average band, despite the straightforward tempo and the chaotic style of riffing the music somehow lacks the atmospheric appeal.

Another example in this effort is “Kaleidoscopic Visions of Porous Obsidian Eternities” which delivers tight pummeling and brutal riffing without sounding repetitive or monotonous. Dead And Dripping influences extend to the style of Suffocation, Pyrexia, and other bands like Deeds of Flesh. The riff segments and the complex song arrangements show the level of cohesion, and this is what makes the album shine in the songwriting aspect. “Molecular Degradation upon Warped Onyx Stoves” and the final track “Hysterical Mirages of Otherworldly Calamity” churn out the most brutal and down-tuned chugging riffs, not to mention the croaky insane growls.

REVIEW SCORE

  • Music / Songwriting 8/10
  • Vocals / Lyrics 8/10
  • Mix / Production 8/10
  • Artwork & Packaging 8/10
  • Originality 8/10

With that being said, “Blackened Cerebral Riffs” finely arrays a variety of styles the production doesn’t lack the organic sound of the brutal old-school death metal. The third album is full of insane pummeling and chaotic song structures that transition into tons of breakdowns.
