Earlier this year, Floridian melodic death metal band Blood of Angels released their debut EP Rise of the Fallen Gods through Hollywood Collective. This very short EP (which is merely twelve minutes long) contains three songs based on Norse mythology. Despite this being a very popular subject in the metalscene, I was curious as to what would come of it.
The first song Miscreant Deeds of Loki comes in with a bang, setting the standard pretty high for the rest of the album. Fast drumming, very catchy, well paced riffs and the deep guttural growls make this track a really good opening. Despite there only being one guitarist, the sound is full and every time I listen to it, I notice something new. Second song of the EP is Odin’s Wrath. For the people who have been following this band, they’ll know this song was also released as a single. Again, this track is pretty catchy despite sometimes having a boring feel due to the repetitiveness of the guitarwork. Luckily there’s enough going on in the track to keep one’s attention. Last track of this EP is The Final War. This really is a more interesting song than its predecessor. The song implements a lot of change in tempo, adding power as the song evolves. All the instruments complement one another right up to the very end.
All in all I’m happy with the result of this Floridian band. They showed diversity in their music, proving not to be generic but being open to a wide variety of sounds. I’m just hoping they continue this open minded view because I find the change is what makes this album interesting.
