Tuska in Helsinki has been a yearly celebration that was sorely missed the past couple of years due to the pandemic. Luckily it seems that festivals are finally back at full force and so is Tuska! With some new elements, some line-up that was brought along from those cancelled editions and a whole lot of excitement about one of our favorite festivals being back, we can hardly wait!

The Bands

The headliners will provide solace for both fans of the heydays of old school heavy metal and nu metal with on Friday Korn, Saturday the mighty Mercyful Fate and on Sunday the festival wrapping up with Deftones!

But that’s of course not all! If the headliners of a festival are not what draws you in, you’re in luck, because the rest of the line-up is pretty solid as well with international acts Vola, Church of the Dead, The Night Flight Orchestra, VLTIMAS, High On Fire, Elder, Joe Lynn Turner, Gloryhammer, Red Fang, Perturbator, The Dark Element, Soilwork, Eluveitie, Baroness, Symphony X, Heilung, Devin Townsend, Kreator and Carcass.

And as usual, there is a wide array of Finnish acts representing the local scenes as well. Which is even bigger than before with the brand new added 4th “TUSKA KVLT” stage! You’ll find acts like Atlas, Humavoid, Edge of Haze, Rebellix, Cryptic Hatred, The Mist From The Mountains, One Morning Left, King Satan, Reckless Love, Astralion, Amoth, Polymoon, Detset, Shereign, The Rivet, Abstrakt, Verikalpa, Shape Of Despair, Lähiöbotox, Bloodred Hourglass, Omnium Gatherum, Wheel, Oranssi Pazuzu, Blind Channel, Lost Society, Mokoma, Northern Kings, Stratovarius, Beast In Black, Stam1na and Amorphis!

The Timing

Tuska 2022 takes place during the first weekend of July from Friday July 1st to Sunday July 3rd. With the doors open

  • on Friday July 1st from 13:00 – 01:00
  • on Saturday July 2nd from 13:00 – 01:00
  • on Sunday July 3rd from 14:00 – 23:00

Since Tuska is a city festival, the last festival day ends relatively early with the last notes from Deftones leaving the speakers by about 22:00 already.

The Grounds

The last edition back in 2019 had a completely new lay-out, which came with its issues. The organization tried to resolve those the best they could already during the festival itself, but even though they haven’t been able to go through with any of their events the past 2 years, they clearly haven’t been sitting still. The whole festival area got a complete overhaul with most of the stages been moved around and even a 4th “TUSKA KVLT” stage added! There are clearly plenty of bars and there’s a whole food court located next to the main stage for everyone’s needs. Let’s hope that the new lay-out brings a better crowd flow than was the case back in 2019. We’re very curious to see and experience it for ourselves!

This is the way

Tuska is known to be one of the few open air metal festivals that take place in a major city and not on the outskirts of one. The grounds are at the event area called Suvilahti, which is the easiest to reach by public transport. We’re not saying that it’s impossible to go by car, but it wouldn’t be recommended since parking will be rather costly and traffic will be tough.

The best way to arrive to Tuska is by public transport: From Helsinki center you can get almost at any major point on the metro to travel to closest metro stop Kalasatama, or the REDI mall, in 10 min tops. The mall is also a partner of the festival and the place to be to exchange your tickets for a bracelet, or try to get your hands on a ticket still if there are any remaining. The mall is also conveniently located right across the street of the main entrance of the festival, you’ll hardly have to walk…

See Helsinki City Transport website for details.

The Stay

There is a camping you can travel to by metro, but this camping is not associated with the festival, so arrangements need to be made separately. But if you have a bit of cash left still to spend, we’d highly recommend to get a hotel room or a Air BNB somewhere in the city since you’re right there anyway and it’s simply more fun to have a bit more comfort during a festival weekend.

Grub and Booze

There are usually quite some drink options, with stands that offer special cocktails and in the past even a whiskey bar. What they’ll have this time around we can’t promise you for sure, but besides the standard Finnish beers, ciders, longdrinks and soft drinks, we’re sure there will be some fun things to discover.

Tuska is also known to often have a proper food court where they collect all the food trucks in one big square or circle and where there’s something for every heart’s desire from classic festival grub, fancied up fast food, international dishes to even proper vegan options. You won’t get hungry!
