Northern metal lords Grand Magus once again return to strike with a powerful epic album. Wolf God is the title of the band’s ninth album, where the Swedish trio offer another worthy addition to their discography. The twenty years of prowess musicianship has resulted into a large fan base from around the world. The heavy metal veterans who have gotten heavier by time, have shifted their musical style away from the oriented doom metal style and blues influences to solid metal. Their exceptional tonality of doom metal and catchy choruses is what makes them so special. Grand Magus latest albums such as Hammer of the North, The Haunt, Triumph and Power were prosperous in every sense of musical achievement.

Years of cultivation and hard work has led them to emerge to the edifice of the top notch heavy metal bands. Grand Magus unbind their respective talents by bringing quality to their songs the new album Wolf God is epically saturated. The opening track Gold and Glory is a beautiful musical piece composed of cello and it can perfectly fit into a fantasy soundtrack. The second track begins with the crushing riffs of titanic metal, and its majestically empowered by the loud amplified guitars and drums. In fact Wolf God musical direction is very similar to the previous albums, only this time the band has enhanced the signature style. J.B. Christoffersson vocal tone is impeccable and powerful.

The riff lords weave many mountainous riffs and catchy choruses on the album, the third track A Hall Clad in Gold continues to reverberate. Where the thundering guitar riffs and hammering drums strike at full force, basically the band has got rid of the unwanted elements. The new album builds on a refined sound from the power chords, and the blazing riffs that will make you head bang! Grand Magus music is both professional and catchy, now despite of the improvement from their previous album Sword Songs. Wolf God doesn’t offer anything new but the band has brought some ideas where every track is set on constructive songwriting and variety of riff tone. The dominance of the triumphant sensation surrounds the tracks making them sound so glorified, and the soaring guitar solos uplifts the spirit.

Onwards to Brother of the Storm kicks in heavily and striking drums beats of Ludwig Witt increases the thrills. JB’s rhythmical vocals and repeated choruses are damned catchy, the guitar installation and the throbbing bass lines of Fox Skinner are awesomely done. Wolf God is again rooted within the heavy metal spectrum from speed metal to traditional metal style, as you can hear many influences from legendary bands such as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. The heavy/doom tonality conquers the overall tone, where the band delivers a powerful performance as they restore the memorability on each track.

The natural sound effects on Dawn of Fire gives it a sentimental value. The track contains some tremendous riffs where the influential epic effect is raised by the glorious solos and solid deliverance. For some old school tunes Spear Thrower is an emphatic track of classic heavy metal song, where the galloping guitars are massively performed. The high spirited choruses are gritty yet catchy, this is only an example of an energetic powerful sound from a band that brings enough quality to the music. Grand Magus are experts in creating the epic moments, To Live and Die in Solitude marches on steadily and it has that strong Viking feel.

Glory to the Brave is a chunk full of riffs, the fabulous versatility from booming thunderous riffs are amazingly designed to catch your attention. What’s great about Wolf God is that the tracks seem to flow very naturally and the consistency factor here is genuine. There is no doubt that the band embraces the Viking spirit, the bold presentation and the magnetic intensity of He Sent Them All to Hel has that vigor energy. Now the final track Untamed is a heavy slab of classic metal brilliance, this track has a fast galloping tempo. And it’s a great song to end this massive album, Untamed is composed of chunky riffs and catchy vocals and chorus. Wolf God is an excellent album and in my opinion this might be their best effort to date, this is absolutely an outstanding album and if you consider yourself a fan of heavy metal then you must get this. Everything about Wolf God is pure quality, it’s beautifully written and the Swedish stalwarts are still marching strong.
