Every year about half way summer a small festival rises close to Gent in Belgium. What you get at Roadkill Festival is a mix of musical styles ranging from rockabilly to country to black metal and a whole bunch of side activities. We’ve enjoyed the event several times before and thought it was the ideal moment to send some questions in the direction of the guys behind the whole thing to try and dig some stuff up about their vision and plans for Roadkill in the future

Can you introduce your organisation?

The organisation of Roadkill Festival exists of 6 members, each with a clear task. Every time we’re working for a bit under a year to make Roadkill Festival a cozy and nice weekend. Next to that we all have a full-time job and kids (or a dog).

Our mission is to organize a festival with a nice atmosphere in the first weekend of August in Waarschoot with heavy rock ‘n’ roll bands.

How did you guys think of the idea to start organizing the festival?

To some day get Motörhead in Waarschoot, even though in the mean time that chance has become quite small.

The founders of Roadkill Festival, Kim Overmeire and Brecht Van Wynsberghe, are coming from the metal scene of Meetjesland. In that area there was back then a really big list of metal events (Club Klunen, Metal in the streets, Skullfest). You could maybe even say that there were too many. Kim and Brecht were convinced that it didn’t necessarily had to be metal to still rock your hearts out. Stoner, punk, rock ‘n’ roll also deserved a spot in Meetjesland. In 2007 they organized the first Roadkill Festival in CC Den Hoogend Pad in Adegem. After the first edition the festival moved to a warehouse in Waarschoot where the backstage was shared with kilos of potatoes. Roadkill Festival has had 4 editions in that warehouse. And then we moved to the close by field. Since then the cows have to move 1 weekend per year from the field to make place for Roadkill Festival.

You have a quite wide selection of music genres instead of limiting yourself to 1 genre, how did you get inspired for that?

It’s a lot of fun and a challenge to bring variation in the line-up. The taste of music of the organisation is very eclectic. If a band carries rock ‘n’ roll in its soul, they can have a spot at Roadkill Festival.

Roadkill Festival 2018 for instance has indeed a varied line-up. With very heavy bands on Friday (like Alkerdeel, Wiegedood & Integrity) and true rock ‘n’ roll, punk and garage rock bands on Saturday (like Electric Eel shock, Clowns, Thee Hypnotics & Nashville Pussy).

Do you prefer to give the stage to lesser known, local talents or do you rather aim at the bigger bands?

Both. We think it’s pretty cool to have a bigger band like Nashville Pussy or Integrity (or High on Fire in the past) on our stage in Waarschoot. But at the same time we think it’s important to give lesser known or local talents a stage to show their stuff.

This year we have for instance Majestic Sun and local heroes Alkerdeel. Last year’s edition we had with Fire Down Below, Lost Baron and the local band Eyes On The Machine also lesser known bands on the bill. We think it’s awesome to now see that those bands are getting more opportunities (Fire Down Below has a record deal with Ripple Music and recently opened for Fu Manchu). The line-up of Roadkill Festival has quite a lot of Belgian bands. Belgium has a big pond of booming talent. Every year we try to catch some beautiful fish from there. We also never had a band on our stage that we didn’t like ourselves. We try to bring a nice mix between those big and lesser known bands.

Do you think the rivalry with the other (and possibly bigger) summer festivals difficult?

No, we don’t see the other festivals as rivals. We like to do our own thing at Roadkill Festival. And we all like to go to festivals ourselves. The more nice bills, the better. It’s really cool to see that there is even cooperation between festivals. We even make promotion for each other. (like with Heldorado, Oilst Omploft, Concert venue De Casino and Sjock Festival).

Are there certain moments of past editions that stuck to your memory?

Definitely. Like the inexplicable amount of tissues behind the bar, the guys of the Ramonsters who were driving their car on the bike road, thinking that 400 liters of pee isn’t much and will go in the ground fast and the beautiful oldtimer in the field of leeks. Just to pick out a few.

Which band would you really love to book some time in the future?

A double reunion show of El Guapo Stuntteam & Peter Pan Speedrock. (or Motörhead).

What do you guys want for the future?

A cure for all STD’s. Besides that for Roadkill Festival everything can stay the way it is. The power of Roadkill Festival is, next to a very nice line-up, especially the good atmosphere, the friends that meet up there, the new friendships that are made there. Roadkill Festival is a big family (drunk uncles included).

Kunt u uw organisatie even voorstellen?

De organisatie van Roadkill Festival bestaat uit 6 leden, elk met een duidelijke taakomschrijving. We zijn telkens een klein jaar bezig om van Roadkill Festival een gezellig weekend te maken. We hebben daarnaast allemaal een full-time job en kinderen (of een hond).

Ons doel is om in het eerste weekend van augustus een sfeervol festival te organiseren met stevige rock ‘n roll bands in Waarschoot.

Hoe zijn jullie op het idee gekomen om het festival te starten?

Om ooit Motörhead in Waarschoot te krijgen, al is die kans ondertussen redelijk klein.

De oprichters van Roadkill Festival, Kim Overmeire en Brecht Van Wynsberghe, komen uit de metalscene van het Meetjesland. In die streek was er toen een heel groot aanbod aan metal-evenementen (Club Klunen, Metal in the streets, Skullfest). Er was misschien zelfs  sprake van een overaanbod. Kim en Brecht waren er van overtuigd dat het niet persé metal moest zijn om toch keihard te rocken. Ook voor stoner, punk, rock ‘n roll mocht er plaats zijn in het Meetjesland. In 2007 hebben ze dan het eerste Roadkill Festival georganiseerd in CC Den Hoogend Pad in Adegem. Na de eerste editie is het festival verhuisd naar een hangar in Waarschoot waar de backstage gedeeld werd met kilo’s aardappelen. Roadkill Festival heeft 4 edities plaats gevonden in die hangar. Om dan naar de nabijgelegen wei te verhuizen. Sindsdien moeten de koeien om de wei 1 weekend per jaar plaats maken voor Roadkill Festival.

Jullie hebben een erg breed aanbod, in tegenstelling tot jullie te ‘beperken’ tot 1 genre, wat was daar de inspiratie voor?

Het is zeer leuk en een uitdaging om variatie te brengen in de line-up. De muzieksmaak van de organisatoren is vrij eclectisch. Als een band rock ‘n roll in zijn ziel draagt kunnen ze een plaats hebben op Roadkill Festival.

Roadkill Festival 2018 heeft inderdaad een gevarieerde line-up. Met zeer stevige bands op vrijdag (oa Alkerdeel, Wiegedood & Integrity) en ware rock ‘n roll, punk en garagebands op zaterdag (oa Electric Eel shock, Clowns, Thee Hypnotics & Nashville Pussy).

Geven jullie graag het podium aan minder bekend, lokaal talent of richten jullie je eerder op grotere bands?

Beide. We vinden het vrij cool om een grote band als Nashville Pussy of Integrity (of High on Fire in het verleden) op ons podium te hebben in Waarschoot. Maar tegelijkertijd vinden wij het belangrijk om minder bekend of lokaal talent een podium te bieden.

Dit jaar hebben we oa Majestic Sun en lokale helden Alkerdeel. Vorige editie hadden we met Fire Down Below, Lost Baron en de lokale band Eyes On The Machine ook minder bekende bands op onze affiche staan. We vinden het super om nu te zien dat deze bands meer kansen krijgen (Fire Down Below heeft een platendeal bij Ripple Music en heeft onlangs geopend voor Fu Manchu). De line-up van Roadkill Festival heeft ook vrij veel Belgische bands. België heeft een zeer grote vijver vol knallend talent. Elk jaar proberen wij daar wat mooie vissen uit te halen. We hebben overigens nog nooit een band op ons podium gezet die we zelf niet goed vinden. We proberen een mooie mix te brengen tussen grote en minder bekende bands.

Vinden jullie de concurrentie met de andere (eventueel grotere) zomerfestivals moeilijk?

Neen, we zien andere festivals niet als concurrenten. We doen graag ons eigen ding op Roadkill Festival. En we gaan ook allemaal graag zelf naar festivals. Hoe meer mooie affiches, hoe beter. Het is zeer cool om te merken dat er zelfs samenwerking is tussen festivals. Er wordt zelfs promo gemaakt voor elkaar. (Oa met Helldorado, Oilst Omploft, Concertzaal De Casino en Sjock Festival).

Zijn er bepaalde momenten van vorige festivals jullie bijgebleven?

Zeker weten. De onverklaarbare hoeveelheid zakdoekjes achter de toog, de mannen van de Ramonsters die met de auto langs het fietspad rijden, denken dat 400 liter pipi niet veel is en snel de grond in trekt en de prachtige oldtimer in het preiveld. Om een maar een paar uit te pikken.

Welke band willen jullie ooit nog boeken?

Een dubbele reünieshow van El Guapo Stuntteam & Peter Pan Speedrock. (of Motörhead).

Wat willen jullie nog voor de toekomst?

Een geneesmiddel voor alle soa’s. Daarnaast mag voor Roadkill Festival alles blijven zoals het is. De kracht van Roadkill Festival is, naast een zeer knappe line-up, vooral de goede sfeer, de vrienden die elkaar daar zien, de nieuwe vriendschappen die gesmeed worden. Roadkill Festival is een grote familie (zatte nonkels inbegrepen).
