Brazilian act Nungara releases new music video for ‘North Star’
Berlin-based Brazilian metal band NUNGARA released their new music video for “North Star“, the closing track of their EP Reflections in Stillness, on March 7, on the eve of International Women’s Day. Known for their powerful fusion of ethereal clean vocals and brutal growls, NUNGARA pushes their sound even further with their most progressive track to date.
“North Star” is a reflection on life’s journey, emphasizing that true fulfillment comes from embracing the process rather than solely focusing on the final destination. Using the metaphor of a lone traveler sailing by night being guided by the North Star, the song conveys the beauty and hardship of chasing one’s aspirations and dreams, culminating in the realization that the journey itself is the ultimate destination.
“This song is a personal reminder to find love and joy in the process of achieving goals in life. Even when it gets hard and I feel like I’m lost in a stormy sea, I know I’m guided by my inner vision, my ‘North Star.’ That thought keeps me grounded, reminding me to find happiness and purpose in the journey itself.” – Noelle dos Anjos, vocalist and guitarist of NUNGARA
“Releasing the ‘North Star’ video on the eve of International Women’s Day was a very meaningful choice for us. In extreme metal, there is still a long way to go for greater female recognition, and we want to be part of that change. The song is about finding happiness in the journey, and being a woman in this industry often means that, staying strong despite the challenges, not letting anything dim your light. We hope our music resonates with many people and touches many women this Women’s Month.” – Noelle dos Anjos, frontwoman of NUNGARA
Directed by Kumar Productions in Germany, the North Star music video brings the song’s themes to life with striking shots filmed at Castalian Spring Studios in Berlin and the icy beaches of the Baltic Sea. The moody, cinematic visuals capture the vastness of the ocean, mirroring the boundless journey of life. Though shot in daytime, clever special effects transform the footage into an atmospheric nighttime setting with thunderstorms representing life’s obstacles, which eventually fade, symbolizing clarity and personal growth.
Despite battling the biting coastal winds during filming at the Baltic Sea in January, NUNGARA remained committed to delivering stunning visuals that match the intensity of their music. Frontwoman Noelle dos Anjos crafted a handmade macramé top for the video, spending 23 hours knotting 110 meters of recycled cotton strings to create a unique piece that she wears in the video. The cloud sky backdrop was also a DIY project by the production team, using fluffy cotton balls and LED strip lights to mimic a stormy sky and enhance the visual storytelling.
Founded by Noelle dos Anjos, ex-Cobra Spell and ex-AlkoholikA, and drummer Murilo Frade, NUNGARA, meaning “equal” or “similar” in Tupi-Guarani, has been shaping its own identity in the metal scene since 2019. The band blends haunting clean vocals with aggressive growls, backed by heavy, groovy metal riffs. Their lyrics explore themes of personal struggle, stoic philosophy, and environmental concerns, encouraging reflection and action.
Following their self-produced debut single Sumaúma in 2020, which called attention to the devastating Amazon Rainforest fires, NUNGARA independently released their four-track EP Reflections in Stillness in September 2023, defining their musical and lyrical direction.
