Hailing from France, Omegaeternum is a black metal band, their music imparts a mystical sense of atmosphere. The debut full-length album “1248” was released via Van Records on November 25th, 2024. Omegaeternum conjures something much more menacing to create a gloomy sensation, with keyboards and your standard black metal screeches sounding dark and the tremolo pickings cascading from the furious drums; the epic hooks enhance the raw atmosphere.

Omegaeternum premiered their first single “1248 The Symbols Swallowers” and it was enough to get me all excited about their debut album. Just like most black metal bands, the French quartet has a unique way the keyboards are combined often to create eerie atmospheres. Though there are many beautiful and epic passages in songs like “The Endless Quietus” the vocals have excellent rasps with the drums adding fuel to the scathing tremolos, there is a captivating element to the songwriting that provides a mystical and epic experience.

There are no filler tracks as they are all consistently dark and atmospheric, the drums are constantly played at a fast tempo with some slower sections offering plenty of twists and melodic tremolos have their unique way of entertaining the listener. The classical and traditional approach of Omegaeternum in the fourteen-minute track “The Devious Deceiver” showcases the composition in depth with the dark and slow guitar chords and the majestic feel that the raspy vocals and the guitars emphasize cold black metal riffs is something the band does it uniquely.

The inspiration for the 90s European black metal bands is quite valid because Omegaeternum has a knack for projecting a slow burn of atmospheric hooks that hypnotize the listener with the smooth atmosphere of the cold freezing riffs; the catchy melodies creep forth from the darkness to encapsulate the music. Haunting rasps echoing from melancholic soundscapes; the vocals are spiteful and full of malice, perfect for those who worship bands like Aeternus, early Hades, Arthemesia, and Emperor.

Omegaeternum explores the spiritual realm of epic black metal; the mid-tempo parts capture the majestic atmosphere of the music, while the raspy tone of the vocals enhances the grim sensation.

The quartet maintains the sinister atmosphere and there are plenty of juxtaposing tremolo-picked riffs and contrast between the cold riffing, fast drumming, and the dark atmosphere, showcasing the monumental songwriting talent of these Frenchmen. The whole composition is beautifully crafted, although some moments become too monotonous due to the repetition, but the music conjures dark emotions, the minimal use of keyboards is reminiscent of Burzum’s album “Filosofem”.

The cold, chilling atmosphere then wafts through the song “1248: The Symbols Swallowers” and these opening moments emphasize the intensity of the drums to provide blast beats. The dark and eerie atmosphere maintains the quality and the tight organic musicianship of the band, there is a complex aspect to the songwriting and the tremolo melodies when the tempo transitions from mid-tempo to fast-paced sections.

1248: The Silent Tears of the Stone Giant” is a short instrumental interval comprised of slow drum beats and eerie atmospheric keyboards, the album also contains three lengthy songs “1248: Echoes from the Depths”, “My Inner Decline” and the closing track “In Outerverse Slumber” are all epic, sorrowful and melodic in their majestic compositions.

The majority of these songs are laden with tremolo-picked riffs and simultaneously injecting a raw and hateful black metal feel through the fast-paced tempos. Musically Omegaeternum takes many elements from Scandinavian black metal bands, the whole atmosphere of the album is centered on themes of forests and mystical rivers.

My only criticism is that some of the songs are very long overall the debut cements its atmosphere and sound by balancing a sense of beauty and aggression with a touch of mysticism, especially with the use of clean vocals and the slow mid-tempos and there are many build-ups and slow transitions and drastic changes in each of these songs.
