Beherit (Ääniwalli, Helsinki) – 30/08/2024

30.8.2024 was like an unholy pilgrim for any and all metalheads around Finland. In 2023 one of the most revered black metal bands of all time shockingly announced they will play one live show for the first time since 1992. But it didn’t stop there, in 2024 Beherit played their first shows outside of Finland in Japan and finally, in August, they played their first show ever in Helsinki. The atmosphere and anticipation even arriving to the venue was palpable seeing hundreds upon hundreds of metalheads gathered around the venue to drink and reminisce from all ages seeing the band for the first time and older metalheads whom have seen the band before many of the other attendees have been even born. This was a generational experience, and you just had to be there to actually experience it.

The air was thick and sweaty and the whole room was electric in anticipation of seeing the almighty Beherit on stage. Ominous noises are playing on the background and finally massive stands of the Beherit goat are removed from the stage and the master himself Nuclear Holocausto Vengance marches on stage starting the night with masterpiece Unholy Pagan Fire, sending the whole room into a trance-like state, straight followed with all-time classic The Gate of Nanna showing that they weren’t play ing around. What an absolutely insane start to this historic evening, bringing out the big guns straight away.

The lights turned red, in the shade of their first album The Oath of Black Blood and Beherit‘s newest addition Black Masswhom have taken on the guitar duty leaving Nuclear Holocausto to focus solely on live vocals – took the mic and delivered absolutely beastial vocals to early Beherit songs Grave Desecration and the album’s signature song Oath of Black Blood.

Satan represents man as just the another animal
Sometimes better more often worse than those who walk on all fours
Who because of his “divine spiritual and intellectual development”
Has become the vicious animal of all
Hail Satan

In unison the crowd screamed Hail Satan at the end of Tireheb intro tape, lights switched back to blue, and now we were back in the Drawing Down The Moon era. This classic album needs no introductions, any even nearly sophisticated fan of black and/or extreme metal should be aware of this album, and wow, did it sound amazing live. Gotta say, the whole set sounded absolutely terrific, from live mixing, to Nuclear Holocausto‘s live vocals with his special tricks behind his own mixing table, to the original drummer Sodomatic Slaughter and the rest of the band, they absolutely delivered. The rest of the set consisted of songs from said album, and we heard basically every classic song, though leaving some hunger to hear more.

And people craved for more. After leaving, Beherit came to the stage one more time. Lights switched to green, which could only mean one thing – songs from their only black metal album made in this century – Engram.

This was truly a special treat for many, since Engram is still considered a true Beherit album, even though it didn’t come out in the so to speak golden years. And personally, it’s one of my all-time favorite albums ever made in metal. The show ended with fantastic performances of Pagan Moon and All In Satan, capping the night off with the final track Demon Advance.

After the band left the stage making no contact with the crowd – nor speeches to the crowd throughout the whole show – proving that the music spoke for itself in this unholy gathering, everyone seemingly looked that they just had some out-of-body experience I myself at least had.

Safe to say, this was the greatest black metal concert I’ve ever witnessed in my life.
