We met up in Helsinki with Pasi Löfgrén (guitars) and Jussi Matilainen (vocals) to talk about this brand-new release that they had unleashed upon the world only the day before. It seems like the reactions on the album and earlier released singles and music videos were mostly positive, for which they were more than glad since they put a lot of effort into ‘Kave‘. The new album features a bunch of new elements, because they like to challenge themselves every time they sit down to work on some new music. They did a whole lot of learning for this one, because they wanted to incorporate these old, traditional instruments into the compositions and had to discover what they could (and could not) do with them. Jussi actually ended up playing most of the folk instrumentation, of which some you can expect to be played live as well, while other elements will have to come from recordings since it’s rather difficult to find some of the instruments to be used in a live (metal concert) setting. Jussi also showed quite the evolution in his vocal delivery, not just bringing these deep growls, but having some really high-pitched screams and even throat singing. He told us that the latter was actually quite easy for him, because he’s been doing it for ages and finds it a really good vocal warm-up.

‘Kave‘ does tell a completed story that you can follow from start to finish, but the guys are hesitant to call it a concept album, even though the scale it turned out to be could have been easily framed under that term. When Jussi was writing the lyrics and stories for this album, he went back to one of his first loves: the old Northern tales and mythology, and tried to bring those tales into a more modern setting, linking it with certain experiences and issues we all experience today. He went on to say that if he really would dive into what he all worked out and all the metaphors he incorporated in his lyrics, he probably could go on for another hour or more. In other words, we urge you to really look at the lyrics and see what you can figure out yourself!

When asked if they’d have some new, special stage production that goes with this new direction they’re going, the guys were rather mysterious about it with a “we’ll see”. So there’s only one option: we’ll have to go see them live to experience what the new Where’s My Bible is like on a stage… They do have a couple of shows planned this year still, and are hoping to pin a couple more dates and maybe even festival dates for 2025, something to look forward to!
